Exaltation of Larks - sponsor interview

What does your company do and how do you work with Drupal?
Exaltation of Larks ( http://larks.la ) is a full-service Drupal design and development shop. Our clients range from startups to established corporations, and they come to us because we have a track record of delivering large and complex websites. We are known for doing things with Drupal that have never been done before and we like engineering and design challenges, whether they're about developing new technologies, performance, social interaction design or visual design. Like many, we're seeing a growing demand for Drupal as a backend for mobile and devices.

We also consult on web business strategy, and are good at helping people figure out the details of their business models and how they can be solved with Drupal, or any of the technologies we integrate with Drupal. We have a wonderful array of talent in our company, with outstanding developers, and designers as well as people with management consulting and information science backgrounds. We have core developers as well as Drupal Association board members as partners in the firm.

How did you first get involved in Drupal?
One of our founders, Christefano, was involved with Drupal since the very early years. Then he left Drupal for a while. A few years later, (D 4.6) he and Lee, Larks' other founder, were involved with MIT's Media Lab and decided to build a site in Drupal to support the FabLabs, one of the Media Lab's programs. Later, we consulted when the entire Media Lab switched over to Drupal. By then, we had fallen in love with Drupal and decided to make a go of the business.

What type of work and/or websites do you specialize in?
We've done some of our best work on kids' startups. Digital Dollhouse was a virtual world built on Drupal, and What's What was a Facebook clone for kids that used a biometric (facial recognition) login system. Our infrastructure and process are geared toward large, complex projects with innovative architectures. In the last couple of years, we've branched out into education - working with universities, and to entertainment and media companies here in Los Angeles. We've also been involved in business process innovation and re-engineering company infrastructures.

What are you most looking forward to at DrupalCamp Colorado this year?
DrupalCamp Colorado is one of those conferences that we didn't want to miss. This is our first time attending and sponsoring and we're just happy to be here. Thanks for everything you're doing!

Is there anything else you'd like our attendees to know?
Yes! Recently we, along with several other LA Drupal members, have opened up a Drupal Co-working / Hackerspace called Droplabs. ( http://droplabs.net ) It's turning into a wonderful place where people can work together and host events. We're using it to explore different ways that people can learn and collaborate.

There's a Pro Drupal Development book club that is forming that will meet there, as well as the regular Downtown Los Angeles meetups. We're having a job fair there on the 21st, coinciding with our Exaltation of Larks module development training and a Downtown LA Drupal meetup. We're having a barnraising for a non-profit next month. It's starting to heat up there.

It's free to visit for the next month or so while we figure out how we're going to organize memberships. If you're in LA and would like a space to hang out and work with other Drupal developers, or have a meeting with a client, Droplabs is there for members of the Drupal community.
